Most people know that a healthy body begins with a healthy diet, but did you know that your smile needs healthy food too! If you want the benefit of healthy teeth and gums, you will want to make sure to get the nutrition your smile deserves.

Today, Dr. James C. Ma and our team are happy to share with you some smile-healthy tips to help you prevent the ravages of tooth decay and gum disease. And it all begins with dairy, protein, vegetables, and fruit. What’s on your plate? Be sure to include the following:

Dairy: These dairy foods are packed with calcium and protein: cheese, milk and plain yogurt. What does this mean for you? Actively strengthening your pearly whites!

Protein: Providing your teeth with protein and phosphorous through meat, eggs, poultry, and fish, rebuilds and protects your pearly whites.

Vegetables/Fruit: You will bring vitamin A, vitamin C, beta carotene, calcium, and magnesium to the table when you partake of apples, carrots, leafy greens, and citrus. Not only that, but these also contain water and fiber which stimulate saliva production because of the chewing action. You want healthy levels of saliva because it helps wash away plaque and bacteria. And foods with vitamin C and other vitamins help protect the gum tissue from bacterial infection.

For any questions or concerns about your oral health, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team in Bakersfield, California by calling 661-324-9709 or to schedule an appointment. Our James C. Ma team is happy to help you maintain your healthy smile!
